Wonderful Wednesday's 'Hot Spot'September 29th, 2010 By Corey Chavous
The Oklahoma State football team (pictured above) is off to a very hot start offensively, averaging nearly 600 yards of total offense per game. They look to stay undefeated this weekend at home vs. Texas A&M in Stillwater, OK. Who's Hot Oklahoma State Offense This team won't be under the radar for much longer, and why wouldn't we mention the Cowboys? They are the #1 ranked offense in terms of total yards/game in FBS Subdivision play at 596 yds/gm. The Cowboys average 53 points a game offensively. Their line averages 6'5" 324 on the edges and their run scheme is highlighted by running back Kendall Hunter. Hunter has regained his '08 All-American form when he ran for 1,555 yards and averaged 6.5 yards per carry. QB Brandon Weeden, all 6'4" 224 pounds of him, is quickly making Cowboy fans forget about former starter Zac Robinson. He is averaging 315 yds/total offense per outing, and unlike his predecessor, doesn't do as much damage with his feet. He doesn't have to, because his chemistry with sophomore WR Justin Blackmon could go down as the best in school history. Blackmon has an amazing total of 8 receiving TDs in just three games. The only thing that has cooled this offense is the bye week they received last Saturday. Stanford Cardinal Head coach Jim Harbaugh has led the ninth ranked Cardinal to a 4-0 mark for the first time since 1986 and has nurtured sophomore QB Andrew Luck into a potential Heisman candidate. Luck may be this generation's version of former Cardinal Heisman winner Jim Plunkett. For the dream season to continue, the team must travel to Eugene, Oregon and knock off one of the most explosive football teams in the country in front of a raucous home crowd. Good Luck. Indiana QB Ben Chappel Chappel has been on our radar, but his early season performance has been downright mind blowing. Three games, nine touchdown passes and no interceptions for the 6'3" gunslinger. But hold on a minute. Towson, Western Kentucky and Akron in the team's first three games? Who Cares? The Hoosiers are 3-0 for the third time in the last four years. So who's up next? You guessed it. Denard Robinson and the Michigan Wolverines. Delaware Secondary The team leads the FCS subdivision in interceptions with 10 and opponents have completed passes at a mere 51% clip against the senior-laden defensive backfield. Anthony Bratton is the team’s enforcer from the safety spot, but his backfield mate, Anthony Walters, switches back and forth between corner and safety. What’s all the more impressive is the team’s depth. Cornerback Tyrone Grant is one of the most instinctive players on the team at just 5’9” 175 pounds. Ryan Kerrigan DE Purdue DraftNasty’s preseason Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year is definitely the hottest defender in the conference. In the season’s first month, he basically recorded a season worth of productivity. He has posted 34 tackles, 4.5 sacks, registered two double digit tackle games, forced 3 fumbles and has 8.5 TFLs (tackles for loss). Who’s Not Jerrod Johnson QB Texas A&M Johnson saved the worst game of his career for Florida International two weeks ago. We held our breath. But even after a bye week, his four interception performance in Week Three against the Panthers when you’re a legitimate Heisman dark horse reserves you a seat on this list. Johnson will look to rebound this weekend and take his team to 4-0 against an Oklahoma State team that is scoring points in bunches. Prairie View A&M Many felt that this pat weekend’s State Texas Fair matchup would be the inspiration for the team’s potential turnaround. But after a 34-17 loss to Grambling State, the defending SWAC champions have now lost three games in a row. They are ranked 110th in the nation in total offense, 104th in total defense and average just 13.4 pts/gm. If there is a bright spot for the team, it’s that SWAC Preseason Player of the Year QB KJ Black is beginning to come around to full health. Idaho Offensive Line Quarterback Nathan Enderle came into the season with high expectations after a 22 touchdown performance in 2009. While he has rebounded nicely in his last two games (4 TDs/Int), he’s been snake bitten by pressure from opposing teams. The line has given up 16 sacks, which included seven versus Nebraska. Not surprisingly, Enderle threw a career-high five interceptions in Lincoln, including one that was returned for a score. Got an item? Please send an email to [email protected]
