Bryant’s Beehive: Players to Watch

November 25th, 2010 By De'Angelo Bryant

In this week’s edition of Bryant’s Beehive. Bryant lists his top 8 players to watch for in this week’s season finale of FCS football. Click here to find out the one junior to make the top 8 on Bryant’s list.

#15 RB Bidal Powell, Louisville

After sitting on the shelf the last two seasons, senior RB Bidal Powell has returned to his old form under new HC Charlie Strong. Powell is second in the Big East in rushing with 1,207 yards and 9 touchdowns on the season. He runs with good explosiveness and power, often reaching the second level at the drop of a dime. This Friday, he is going to face a Rutgers defense that gives up 148 yards per game and ranks last in the Big East giving up 14 rushing touchdowns. Expect for Powell to have another 100 yard rushing performance in Louisville’s season finale.

#77 LT James Carpenter, Alabama

Since the downfall of the Tide this season, many people have overlooked the 6’6, 300 pound LT from Augusta, Ga.  Carpenter was a dominate force last season in the Tide’s power rushing attack, but has struggled this season in pass protection.  He‘s a good athlete that shows surprising quickness, particularly on screens.  However, he will face an Auburn defense that is scrappy and plays well off of emotions. It will be interesting to see how Carpenter holds up against the schematics of Ted Roof’s defense.

#97 DE Cameron Jordan, California

If you have not had the chance to see Jordan in action, you are in for a treat. At 282 pounds, he displays great pass rush variety to get to QB, as well as power to penetrate the backfield. Jordan currently has 10.5 TFL’s this season, just 2.5 shy of second in the Pac 10.  Jordan will have his work cut out for him as he tries to contain Jake Locker and the Washington Huskies offense.

#1 WR Greg Salas, Hawaii

Salas is closing on a personal best after putting up great statistics last season. Salas has 91 receptions for 1,390 yards and 9 touchdowns this season with 2 more games to play.  With his quickness and explosivenesses, New Mexico State CB Davon House will be entertained for much of the game. Hawaii does a good job of moving him around according to formations, which causes the defense to shift coverages nearly every snap. The former walk-on should go out with a bang against New Mexico State this Saturday.

#82 DE Steven Friday, Virginia Tech

Friday is one of many new faces on Bud Foster’s defense this season. After appearing in every game except for one last season, Friday has made the most of his senior season. The speedy rusher has 7.5 sacks and 13 TFL’s, despite playing on an inexperienced defense. Friday’s speed should create havoc off the edge against Virginia’s OT’s.

#68 OT Kyle Nunn, South Carolina

Nunn is a junior offensive tackle that has provided the Gamecocks some security up front this season. Nunn stands at 6’5, 304 and has the versatility to play both tackle positions, as he has done for much of this season. While there is uncertainty as to which side he will line up on Saturday, he will face one of the best pass rushers in the country in Clemson's Da’Quan Bowers.

#78 OG Zach Hurd, UConn

If you wonder who’s been clearing the way all season for RB Jordan Todman, Zach Hurd is the answer. He’s a big road grader that has good force when making contact on the LOS. Hurd is a 3-year starter on the Huskies OL and has aided his 3 running backs to over 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons.

#8 WR Marshall Williams, Wake Forest

Take into consideration Wake Forest lost a four-year starter at the quarterback position this season. This is the biggest reason Williams’ numbers are down from a season ago.  At this point, Williams needs to show his ability to create separation, make the hard grabs, and make plays after the catch. This will be his final game to make a lasting impression against Vanderbilt CB Casey Heyward, who leads the SEC with 17 passes defended and 11 pass breakups.
