Will loss of playmaker Reid affect FSU's ACC Title Aspirations in 2012?

August 1st, 2012 By De'Angelo Bryant

Former Florida State CB/RET Greg Reid was recently dismissed from the team after being arrested for the second time in less than a year. Reid was a three-year starter for the Seminoles and is regarded as one of the best punt returners in college football. Reid's NFL potential lies on a balance beam as he moves forward with his college career.

Reid has provided FSU fans with spectacular plays each time he's touched the field. Whether it's returning punts, making big hits, or picking off passes, the 5'8 spitfire kept the excitement for Seminole fans each week. Reid was on track of breaking former FSU CB/RET Deion Sanders' all-time record for career punt return yardage. Now, Reid's career is at a crossroads as FSU dismissed one of its most heralded playmakers just days before they open up fall camp. Only time will tell, but HC Jimbo Fisher and his staff will miss Reid in more ways than one this season.

First, they lose a game-changer as a punt returner. Time after time he has sparkled with field-changing punt returns that have led to big victories. Who could forget his freshman season, when he returned a punt 48 yards versus Maryland to put the team's offense in position to win the game.

Secondly, they lose an experienced player at the CB position. Though he was labeled as somewhat of a gambler, he provided a presence on one side of the field that made opposing QBs second guess throwing in his direction. Lastly, his versatility to play the nickel position provided the defense with insurance coverage on slot receivers, while also creating depth behind him and fellow CB Xavier Rhodes. Greg Reid's legacy at FSU will remain in question. His accomplishments thus far may now be erased.  Wherever he lands up this season, Reid can only hope for a lasting impression to fulfill his dream as a potential NFL player.

He's a huge loss for the Seminoles. Not only has he competed well in coverage against bigger wideouts, it often seemed as if he had a sixth sense on the field. Whether or not he lands at an upper-tier Division I-FCS school is now the biggest mystery.

My question is whether Xavier Rhodes finally meets his potential this year. He seems to be a step behind in coverage too much. Lamarcus Joyner is the most underrated player in a talented secondary. Their D-Line and LBs will make up for a lot of transition in a young, talented secondary. But they CANNOT replace Reid.

I agree cochav. As I stated, Reid is a game changer and was another weapon for FSUs offense. You just don't accidentally become the playmaker he was for the Seminoles. This guy has skills. I anticipate an All-American season if he drops down a level of competition. It's time for Xavier Rhodes to really step it up a notch and play to his skill level.
