|
What to expect this week

#23 Penn State
|
#2 Alabama
|
|
2) Alabama 48
Kent State 7
This Week:
2) Alabama vs.
23) Penn State
|
Alabama
Alabama QBs threw 4 INTs on the afternoon. Kent State managed just 90 yards of total offense on the afternoon.
Penn State
In Happy Valley, it didn’t take long for the Nittany Lions to score. WR-KR Chaz Powell took the opening kickoff of the game back for a touchdown.
|
Alabama QB AJ McCarron did make some mistakes, but generally had good timing with WR Marquis Maze. Maze split the seams down the post to corral a skinny post from McCarron for a score.
The Alabama defense dominated an undermatched Kent State offense (90 yards of total offense).
|
Penn State has to try and establish RB Silas Redd early to get into a rhythm offensively.
Penn State CB D’Anton Lynn has played in the slot, but junior CB Stephon Morris is isolated more to the field. Penn State DT Devon Still needs to play well up front vs. an Alabama running game with a three-headed monster at the position.
Penn State QB Robert Bolden struggled last week early, but Matt McGloin provided a more steady hand by completing his first five passes. It remains to be seen who will get the majority of the snaps this weekend against a stingy Alabama defense.
|
Alabama will probably also rotate its QBs. Look for a hot start from RB Trent Richardson.
CB Dre Kirkpatrick needs to show better techinique than he did vs. Penn State’s 6-foot-5 Derek Moye last season. He was exposed on in-breaking patterns. Moye has sneaky 4.4 speed and will get behind a defense.

#3 LSU
|
Northwestern State
|
|
3) LSU 40
4) Oregon 27
This Week:
vs. Northwestern St.
|
LSU
LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu scored on a fumble he forced in the 2nd QTR. The Tigers rushed for nearly 200 yards and 3 scores.
Northwestern
State
Northwestern State rallied from behind to squeak out a 24-23 victory over Delta State.
|
LSU’s defense limited Oregon RB LaMichael James to an average of just 3 yards per carry.
|
The Tigers will look to get WR Ruben Randle more involved than he was vs. Oregon. He caught just one pass (TD rec) last Saturday.
|
- Continued hot play from QB Brad Henderson
- Northwestern State HC Bradley Peveto will understand Miles’ scheme after serving as an assistant coach on Miles’ staff at LSU.
- Junior S Jamaal White needs to play well, but the play of junior LB Derek Rose may be even more important.

|

#5 Florida State
|
Charleston Southern
|
|
6) FSU 34
ULM 0
This Week:
5) Florida State
vs. Charleston
Southern
|
Florida State
Defensively, All-American candidate DE Brandon Jenkins had two sacks and 3 TFLs.
Louisiana Monroe
QB Kolton Browning managed just 85 yards in the air on 11 completions.
|
FSU CB-PR Greg Reid averaged nearly 18 yards/PR vs. ULM last weekend.
|
Florida State QB EJ Manuel will look to get off to a fast start against an overmatched opponent.
Don’t be surprised if 6-foot-6 inch Rodney Smith makes a play early this Saturday. He caught six passes for 78 yards vs. Lousiana-Monroe.
|
- Will the junior college transfers brought in defensively be able to hold the fort down up front?
- Buccaneers All-Big South OT Levi McFatter will be challenged by FSU’s impressive DEs
- The team surrendered 244 yards passing in last weekend’s 62-0 loss to Central Florida.

#6 Stanford
|
Duke
|
|
7) Stanford 57
San Jose St. 3
This Week:
#6 Stanford vs. Duke
|
Stanford
Senior LB Shayne Skov had 7 tackles and 1.5 TFLs in the team’s opener.
San Jose St.
Senior CB Peyton Thompson, an NFL prospect, notched 8 tackles and 1 PBU.
|
Stanford’s defense held the Spartans to just 27 yards on 32 rushing attempts.
After catching 3 TD passes in the FedEx Orange Bowl, TE Coby Fleener opened the season with 3 receptions and another score.
|
For a team that prides itself on the running game, last week’s 3.5 yds/carry average has to improve.
Don’t be surprised if the team uses multiple backs to try and get RB Stephan Taylor to pick it up, despite scoring two touchdowns a week ago.
|
- The Blue Devils were upset last week by an FCS power, Richmond, in a hard-fought 23-21 game.
- 6-foot-5 junior QB Sean Renfree completed 23-of-33 passes for just over 200 yards.
Senior strong safety #40 Matt Daniels (6’0, 210) had nine tackles, 6 PBUs and .5 TFL last week in an amazing Week One performance.

Texas A&M
WR Jeff Fuller was less than 100% and is currently dealing with a hamstring issue.
SMU
Starting QB Kyle Padron was benched after throwing two early interceptions.
|
Texas A&M’s Tony Jerod- Eddie, after posting 0 sacks a year ago, notched three of the Aggies’ eight sacks on the night.
Senior QB Ryan Tannehill was 21-of-26 for 242 yards and 2 TDs.
Both Texas A&M RBs, senior Cyrus Gray and junior Christine Michael, ran for two scores.

#8 Wisconsin

Oregon State
|
|
#8 Wisconsin 51
UNLV 17
This Week:
vs. Oregon State
|
Wisconsin
The team’s defense gave up 146 yards rushing to UNLV last week.
Oregon State
Junior WR Markus Wheaton, a track performer, tallied six receptions for 108 yards last week.
|
Former NC State transfer Russell Wilson accounted for 317 yards and 3 scores in his first game as a Badger.
|
The Badgers will likely try to get senior WR Nick Toon matched up on the outside with the Beavers’ #1 corner, Brandon Hardin, out with injury.
|
- Strong-armed junior QB Ryan Katz was replaced by freshman Sean Kennison after struggling through most of last week’s upset.
- True freshman RB Malcolm Agnew, the son of former St. Louis Rams’ DT Ray Agnew, ran for 233 yards and 3 TDs in his freshman debut.

#9 Oklahoma State
|
Arizona
|
|
# 8 OSU 61
La-Lafayette 34
This Week:
vs. Arizona
|
Oklahoma St.
WR Justin Blackmon was held without a touchdown catch for the first time in 13 games, but he did snatch 8 balls for 144 yards.
La-Lafayette
Senior CB Dwight Bentley made a house call (INT-TD return) vs. Weeden on a tipped pass and notched two interceptions on the night.
|
Oklahoma State All-American candidate FS Markelle Martin posted 9 tackles, 3 PBUs, 1 TFL and 1 FF in a solid Week One outing.
|
Senior safety Johnny Thomas will be sorely missed after he was recently ruled ineligible for the rest of the season.
It will be interesting to see how much the team goes to the running game after Weeden served up two interceptions for TDs last week vs. the ‘Rajun Cajuns.
|
- This is a rematch of last year’s Alamo Bowl, where OSU won in a rout 36-10.
- Senior CB Trevin Wade struggled some in the slot in last year’s matchup, but he notched his first interception last week since an 85-yard INT TD return vs. Iowa in 2010.
- Arizona WR Juron Criner will not play after going surgery on his appendix on Monday.

#10 Nebraska

Fresno State
|
|
#10 Nebraska 40
UTC 7
This Week:
vs. Fresno State
|
Nebraska
The Cornhuskers ran for 229 yards and limited UTC senior QB BJ Coleman to 174 yards passing.
Tennessee-Chattanooga
Senior wide receiver Joel Bradford caught 4 passes for 47 yards.
|
Nebraska senior LB La’Vonte David had nine tackles to pace the Cornhuskers’ defense last week.
|
The Cornhuskers seemed very vulnerable to becoming anemic in the passing game again. QB Taylor Martinez ran wild again, but completed just 11-of-22 passes on the afternoon.
They need to get their TE-H-Back, Kyler Reed, who scored 8 TDs in 2010, more involved in the passing game.
|
- Sophomore QB Derek Carr, the younger brother of former Bulldog star David Carr, completed 21 passes in his first career start.
|
